Definition

Literal translation of the Kannada word "Howda?", and it means "really?". Liberally used in everyday conversation especially in Bangalore. Often a way of showing interest in what the other person is saying, and can be a way of sympathising with them in case of misfortune. Also used to confirm information.

This word can mysteriously creep into the most grammatically correct conversations in English - if you're shocked, then kindly swalpa adjust maadi . Any attempt to correct users can and will probably result in some serious eyeballing.

Usage

Vidya : Miss miss, I never did my homework miss.
Teacher : Yes-aa? Then you stand up on the bench I say!

Uma : See ya, that waiter fellow dropped sambhar on my saree.
Priya : Yes-aa? Don't worry, same colour only it is. Full orange-orange. Can't see it also.
