In the old days, a Kashi pilgrimage was usually a one-way trip, considering the age of the pilgrims and the distance. People, who followed the Hindu dharma, usually assumed a trip to Kashi meant that it was your Vanaprastha and Sanyas combined and consequently gave up some of their worldy desires to symbolize these stages.
However these days, given that Kashi is probably an hour away by flight from most major towns and you can be back home to catch the next installment of the mega serial, somehow "giving up your desires" does not have the old cachet anymore
