HMT: Half Motte Tale- a mishmash of English and Kannada and a classic example of Kanglish- transliterates to half bald head; someone who's 'half bald' as opposed to 'Full Motte Tale' - someone who's fully bald!

People who have cheap personality and mentality... Generally used by students from convent schools.

Hegal Mel Towelu. A Kannada expression.
Its expansion is " Hegal or Hegalu=shoulder, Mel or Mele= atop, Towel(u)=Towel.
This version of HMT means a villager or a peasant, alluding to the fact that a villager in Karnataka is always seen and mentally visualized as having a towel thrown over his shoulder all the time.
If you act like a pagan, people will call you " Ley, HMT"

Incidentally and as always, slang-acronyms- this one included, are re-engineered forms of another well known acronym. In this case that well known acronym parodied was: HMT that stood for Hindustan Machine Tools, Bangalore, Pinjore, Kalmassery, Hyderabad, Srinagar etc.a mammoth of a public sector that made Machine tools, Watches, Bulbs, Bearings and more. It was highly regarded and economically successful for several decades until all pervading corruption, mismanagement, economic liberalization, extreme trade unionism and obsolescence brought it down just like many more great public sectors of the country.
This original HMT deserves our salute for producing a few generations of excellent engineers and technicians that have propelled manufacturing technology in India.
