Of course, shy is coming for a lot of solicitors of porno and so there is an emerging street lingo of euphemisms for smut. "Daal Gosht" is one such euphemism.

Usage

Indian Aunty: Zara woh waale movies daal dena
Indian Uncle: Can I have some Dall Gosht please?

When you gotta go potty, you gotta gotta go potty, ain't scared of no tiger. Quaint rhyme in villages of central India that translates as when you've got to the loo (hagga), you don't fear even if there is a tiger (baggha) on the loose. Figurative meaning is a desperate man fears nothing. So remember, when you are scared of itty bitty things, there are folks in remote villages shitting outdoors with tigers in the vicinity.

Usage

Chal hat, main nai darta, baggha se nahi dare hagga.

The ultimate door to door recyclers. These enterprising souls push thelas or pedal in cities and neighborhoods, yelling Raddi, Paper, Botal in a pitch that would be the envy of Nusrat Fateh Ali. Middle-class families in India known for their careful ways hoard newspapers, bottles, and old clothes waiting for the occasion when the panhandler pays their street a visit. The visit occurs mid-day, when the mahila of the house will have finished her chores and be ready for the occasion, whence the months' supply of newspapers will be bundled, tied up in a sutli, and handed over for the ceremonial weighing. After a good bit of haggling over the price and the actual weight, a few rupees exchange hands and the money is usually tucked into the blouse, or kept in the almirah. With so much of loose paper and bottles strewn all over the streets, it is a wonder these panhandlers make the effort to go door to door buying Raddi, Paper, Botal. Nevertheless, they are an Indian institution, and keep tonnes of trash off the street and into recycling systems.

Usage

RADDII, PAYYPERR, BOTALLL.

Legendary weekly countdown program aired on Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (Radio Ceylon before the name change) on Wednesday nights from 8-9 pm between 1952-1988, then on AIR through 1994. The announcer always stated prior to the show, yeh sri lanka broadcasting coropration ka videsh vibhaag hai, unnees, pacchees, ekattees aur iktalees meter band par. Aur ab prastut hai, Binaca Geetmaala. It was possibly the longest running weekly show ever in India. It was sponsored by Ciba-Geigy, maker of Binaca toothpaste. Listened to by millions. Hosted by arguably the greatest RJ ever, the dulcet voiced Amin Sayani, it was keenly followed over the entire Indian subcontinent. The weekly show consisted of about 16 songs which made the list based on album sales, write-ins to the station by Shrota-sanghs and the number of farmaaishes on radio. The most popular song of the year acquired legendary status. A stroll in the streets on Wednesday nights would be filled with strains of the Geetmala songs playing on Paanshop transistor radios, in restaurants, at assorted stores and homes as people were glued to their sets. Popular songs would ascend the ladder called paidaan until they made the final list, at which point the song was heralded by bugles, called Bigul. Such a show is unlikely to ever be repeated on Indian radio.

Usage

Binaca Geetmala mein Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Mein yeah saal taap karega. Uss gane ka kal bigul baj gaya.

In India, we take three things very seriously.

First, we love our mothers. We have all internalized the idea that above mother there is no other. Even our favorite Feku Mr. Namo in a recent speech appealed to the mother india argument.

Second, we love our sweets. Ordinary events lead to Muh meetha karo!

Third, we love Bollywood.

At the intersection of Bollywood, Mother and Sweets venn diagram is Gajar Ka Halwa! Made from carrots, it is typically served up by a long suffering grey haired mother, garbed in a crushed cotton sari, to her beloved prodigal son or beta who has returned from serving jail time or some arduous adventure!
Always bright orange in color and always served with love.

Usage

Mother: Beta, Maine tumhare liye gajar ka halwa banaya hai.”(Son, I have made gajar ka halwa for you.)

OR

Ganster 1: “Aaj mere paas gaadi hai, Bangla hai, Rupya hai. Tumhare paas kya hai?”
( Today, I have Cars and Bungalows and Money. What do you have?)

Ganster 2; “Mere paas Maa hain aur maa ke haath ka bana gajar ka halwa hai”.
( I have Mother on my side and the Carrot pudding she makes)

While typically used to refer to a beautiful and fair girl from a village, the expression itself reveals something interesting about us.

Hindi phrase which translates to "the white girl in the village." "Gaon" means "village" and "gori" means "fair."

Being an Indian girl who looks like a gori girl or a foreigner is always a compliment. Also the name of a popular Bollywood movie. Stems from our national obsession with being fair.

Usage

"Modiji’s bharatiya naari is an entirely different breed, best epitomised in iconic ye olde Hindi film cliches: the gaon ki gori sweating over the hot chulha; demure housewife serving chai-paani to her hardworking patidev; long-suffering widow who looks for livelihood to feed her children; soft-hearted mother whose love extends to all of God’s creatures. Why talk to the real women in front of you, when you can wax eloquent about imaginary ones culled from fiction."
